Nashville and Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere recently spoke up about the hard time she went through after having her first child, Kaya, in December of 2014. “It’s something that needs to be talked about. Women need to know that they’re not alone, and that it does heal,” she stated on Live! with Kelly and Michael.

Most people don’t realize it’s common for new moms to experience some stress, sadness and anxiety. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly 15% of women experience postpartum depression, typically 1 to 4 weeks after delivery. Symptoms can range from sleeplessness and depression to feeling negative or disconnected with your new baby

Additionally, “baby blues,” which affect up to 80% of mothers, are mood swings that last a week or two, and go away on their own. With postpartum depression, feelings of sadness and anxiety are more serious. Having a little one involves lots of changes which affect people differently. That’s why HealthPartners screen new moms for postpartum depression at each well-child visit and can put new families in touch with help, if needed.
